So – did the Olympics bring out your sense of national pride or were you a Bah Humbug ol’ cynic?? Here in Yorkshire it was hard to feel anything less then chuffed. I’m not sure where the county finished on the medals table but at one point we were well ahead of Australia which has got to be good.
In my home city of Sheffield we welcomed back local golden girl and face of London 2012 Jessica Ennis with a civic reception complete with local dignitaries, a commemorative plaque and thousands of locals, some of them looking suspiciously like Jess.
I joined the particularly boisterous paparazzi and managed to wrestle my way front middle to get the money shot – Jess, medal and crowd – with a shout of “Scuse me luv” which clearly set me apart from the national hacks. Warm-up entertainment came from local performers Sarah Mac and The Hot Soles..
and BBC Radio Sheffield’s Toby Foster brought on trainer Tony Minichiello, then Jess’ old sports teacher and a couple of local athletes inspired by Jess and hoping to make it to the next Olympiad.
There was a great sense of excitement which even the mayor and the council leader couldn’t dampen and my close encounter with Jess has inspired me to get on the fitness bandwagon…I’m just off to my second session at the gym and my trainer has put me on a strict diet – no bread, no potatoes, no alcohol (I’ve already fallen off that particular wagon). So, Rio 2016 here we come….even if I am only leaping into the photography pit.
