I was photographing Simon Wolstencroft in Manchester recently..does that name ring any cow bells..cymbals even? Well Simon started his professional career as drummer with The Patrol, alongside school mate Ian Brown. He famously turned down the Smiths and spent 11 years with The Fall before numerous collaborations. Simon’s currently doing the PR rounds including an appearance at Deershed, which is staged in Topcliffe near Thirsk. Since this is year 5 of Deershed and I’ve never made it there I thought I’d have a look.
It turned out to be a real breath of fresh air and yes, that’s partly because it’s in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales but it’s also just super civilised – relaxed, safe, clean, lots of activities for kids and just a fun place to hang out.
Check out those cute caravans and some very impressive animal balloons…including my personal fave, this slightly drunken giraffe. The music was also quality stuff…
From Scotland, Steve Mason, founder member of The Beta Band, looked a bit like he’d come out the house in the middle of decorating his front room but great to see him doing so well solo. Stornoway (who are not actually from Scotland and had never been to the island before they purloined the name) are just a rollicking good indie folk band.
Plus, headlining, the man who did make it into the Smiths…and the Cribbs and then all kinds of other prestigious gigs across the globe, Johnny Marr.
It’s always tricky picking your festivals but look out for Deershed 6 next year – it’s a great little festival and well worth a look, particularly if you’ve got young kids. In the meantime, next up on the festival rounds, one of my favourites, Y-Not…maybe see you there..??
