Levens Hall
This is effectively an escape from lockdown project for me and a friend, but also for this stately home. All our amazing venues are beginning to open up for business so we really need to show how much we value them. Just an hour from my doorstep, Levens Hall is home to the world’s oldest topiary. Walking around the grounds every corner delivers a different, yet quintessentially English vignette; a pond covered in water lilies, croquet on the lawn, an ancient apple orchard complete with beehives. We also came across the statue of a hare which, eccentrically, had a pile of coins balanced on his head. It was a joy to photograph this perfectly preserved piece of living heritage. Having survived more than seven centuries of historical conflict, let’s hope Levens Hall will come through this latest challenge in one piece.
