Doc’n Roll energy in Sheffield.

It’s always nice to celebrate a friend’s success and at the Showroom Cinema in Sheffield I was able to do exactly that. Michelle Heighway and I have been mates for many years. And for the last seven of those she’s been working on a documentary about Damo Suzuki, former lead singer of krautrock legends CAN.

ENERGY follows Suzuki over five years, on a never ending global tour, confronting cancer along the way. It’s a wonderful film, screened in Cardiff and Sheffield as part of the Doc’n Roll film festival. The Sheffield viewing was really busy. And “critically acclaimed director” Michelle, was there to field a Q+A where we actually ran out of time. That kind of demonstrates the level of interest and engagement in the room. As always at the Showroom, the audience was a who’s who of Sheffield’s music and film communities. And making an unexpected cameo appearance in the film…yours truly! I went with Michelle to photograph one of Damo’s gigs and ended up getting caught on camera.

Thanks to friend and fellow film maker, Leon Lockley for joining me at the screening. All in all, a great evening and fantastic to be with Michelle, enjoying some well-deserved Doc’n Roll recognition. Further screenings are planned, so if ENERGY comes your way, I really recommend you give it a look.
